Job Security versus Career Security

  • By jetta3 on

There was a time when most people remained with one employer and career for the majority of their adult years.

The benefit is that it was easier to for them to identify their strengths and weaknesses, their likes and dislikes, what they were good and less good at, and the employment opportunities available. The basic assumption was that change would not occur or would at least occur slowly.

But for most workers today, this assumption is not valid any more. The old social contract between employers and employees no longer exists. Downsizing, reorganization, refocusing and business strategies changed all the old rules.

The decision to leave or stay is based not only on an employee's career prospects by the current employer but also on how it might prepare him or her to move on elsewhere. The way people approached their careers in the past is history.

Career security is the development of marketable skills and expertise that help ensure employment within a range of careers. Career security is different from job security in that job security implies security in one job, often with one employer. With career security, workers are offered opportunities to improve their skills – and thus their employability in an ever-changing work environment.
