The Terracotta Warriors

Xi'an is an industrial city and boasts lost of pollution. During the day the façade on the buildings, steps and ground are covered by this fine dust that is the pollution settling down from the coal fired power stations that powers the region. From where we were staying we could walk the streets and find commercial cooking equipment like cookers, steamers, wok burners, fridges, etc, store after store. Refrigeration compressors also rated highly. But at night the landscape was transformed into a sea or luminescent neon. Suddenly the dirt along with the sun disappeared and what was left was a vibrant city alive with people going about their business.


The terracotta warriors, was a sight to behold. Quite unimaginable until you look down through the excavation the shear size and fortitude the emperor must have had, to have manufacture so many life size statues of an army with all its glory. Horses, carriages, weapons, it is all there. The pits are all covered buildings that span hundreds of meters with no internal supports.


Before laying eyes on the excavation we both thought perhaps we could have missed this part of China without missing much. We are both glad we did not.
